Install cameras in the restrooms too, Professor!

Boğaziçi University was known as one of Turkey's most prestigious universities... Then, a magic touch occurred, and the university transformed from its glorious reputation into a controversial institution. 

According to information on the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) website, Boğaziçi University is ranked 514th in the world. However, in the Turkey University Satisfaction Survey conducted by the University Research Laboratory, Boğaziçi University, which was ranked 8th nationwide in 2020, has fallen to 67th place in 2024. 

Now, let's take a look at why it has declined!

The university has a magnificent rector. This esteemed gentleman, who became rector through appointment, has equipped every corner of the university with cameras! Rector Naci İnci, who has been criticized for having cameras installed everywhere on campus, spoke to BBC Turkish and defended himself. According to him, these cameras are absolutely necessary. İnci stated that he had these cameras installed to protect female students from harassment. His justification is alcohol…

The university is falling in the national rankings, but the progressive rector is anticipating what will happen and taking precautions. Look at what he says: "Are there cameras everywhere in the university? There should be, absolutely. Our students, especially our female students, are at risk. Whether through clubs or their own friends, they consume alcohol, even if secretly. And of course, since female students have lower resistance, they lose their own will and there are students who are abused. For the safety of our students, it should be everywhere if possible. Then the girl comes forward, having been a victim; just imagine, that trauma never goes away." 

Just imagine how forward-thinking the appointed rector is. He foresees that girls who drink alcohol will be abused. 

One must congratulate him. Students might be drinking alcohol, but we wonder what you did to reach this level of thinking. Install cameras in the restrooms too, Professor. You never know... Students drinking alcohol might fall there and hit their heads on the toilet bowl or something. In fact, if possible, attach a mini-camera to every student and record every moment in detail. We understood very well that your goal is to protect the students. But install a camera on yourself too, so we can see you up close. 

Now you might ask, how did this person become rector? Through appointment, as is the case in many institutions in Turkey. In fact, when Naci İnci was appointed rector in 2021, Boğaziçi University academics protested the appointment of Mehmet Naci İnci. İnci's candidacy had received more than 90 percent of votes against it in a vote of confidence held by Boğaziçi University faculty members. To show that they do not accept the appointed rector, the academics turn their backs to the rectorate building for 15 minutes every workday. I wonder if İnci is also filming the academics? 

In short, Boğaziçi University has already been boiling like a cauldron for five years. Most recently, Boğaziçi University students also came to the forefront in the protests organized against the arrest of İmamoğlu. Among the 301 students who were detained and arrested following the protests is Yağmur Taylan, the elected president of the Boğaziçi University Student Representative Council (ÖTK).

But of course, the reason the university is equipped with cameras is to prevent girls who drink alcohol from being HARASSED! 

Let's say the appointed rector installed the cameras in the university with this concern. Isn't there an unhealthy thought process here too? Female students drink alcohol and are harassed. I wondered what kind of mindset this is a product of and examined the background of the rector who is trying to protect female students. 

He completed his undergraduate education at Marmara University, his doctorate at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland, and his post-doctoral studies at Stanford University. He worked as a visiting researcher at Gunma University in Japan. One cannot help but think, how can such a bigoted thought exist amidst so much cultural diversity, right? But don't think about it.

It seems there was a reason why he received more than 90 percent of votes against him in the vote of confidence held by Boğaziçi University faculty members...
