Intelligent, Agile, and Ethical…

Wimbledon, the world's most prestigious tennis tournament, is like the holy book of sports.

In England, when you say Wimbledon, life comes to a standstill.

On giant screens in the streets, in restaurants, cafes, and pubs… Everyone is glued to the screen.

As rackets swing on the grass court, an entire country holds its breath.

This year, there was a Turkish girl on those courts!

Zeynep Sönmez…

Her participation in Wimbledon is a historic turning point for Turkish tennis history.

She advanced to the second round by defeating her Romanian opponent, Jaqueline Cristian, in the first round.

No Turkish female tennis player had ever qualified for the Wimbledon main draw before.

Perhaps she wasn't talked about as much in Turkey as footballers who are sent to tournaments on private jets with anthems composed in their honor…

But while she was ranked 74th in the world when entering the tournament this year, she is now at number 70.

Some might say, "It's only four spots."

But those four spots were earned by coming from a culture in Turkey where people still ask, "Tennis? What's that?" and making a name for herself at Wimbledon.

I had the opportunity to get to know Zeynep during her England adventure.

She was here for a commercial shoot.

She had become the face of a cosmetics brand.

Thank God these companies exist so they can support those who are successful in branches other than football!

We spent long hours with Zeynep during the shoot, directed by my dear brother Mehmet İmer, one of the best directors in the advertising industry.

And Atatürk's famous words echoed in my mind:

“I like the athlete to be intelligent, agile, and ethical.”

Zeynep is the living embodiment of these three traits.

No arrogance, no spoiled behavior...

No "I participated in Wimbledon" attitude...

No noisy entourage, no flashy entrances or exits…

Quiet, profound, dignified…

Everything that befits a Turkish woman, or rather, a daughter of the Atatürk Republic, is present in her.

As we say in our country:

“Pull the grass, look at its roots.”

Behind Zeynep is a mother who has dedicated her life to her.

In a system in Turkey where people still say "girls don't play ball,"

a mother who is building a future on the court…

She raised her with the discipline of the court, without taking away her child's childhood and while sacrificing her own life.

Because tennis is a sport where success is almost impossible without a parent who dedicates their life to it.

You can't do this without "family."

And behind this young girl is a mother figure as strong as steel.

If Zeynep were a footballer...

Maybe she would be in a club building right now, getting into her million-dollar car and posting a story.

She would be one of those "stars" living off three sponsors without being able to string three passes or three sentences together.

But tennis is not that kind of sport.

Those who know, know:

You are alone on the court.

There is no referee bias, no excuse of a teammate.

If you make a service fault, you fall alone while the world watches.

Zeynep Sönmez is not just playing tennis.

She carries hope for this country.

In this age where sports turn into shows and character turns into caricature,

she reminds us that success can still be achieved through ethics, discipline, and intelligence.

As in the advertising slogan:

“Our excitement will not fade (Sönmez)!”

And I am sure…

This is just the beginning.
