Today is March 12…
That is, only 3 days have passed since International Women's Day. In three days, the news of femicides adorning newspaper headlines has once again reminded us of what it means to be a woman in Turkey. In just three days, we have seen news of femicides committed by men in all the newspapers, stories that would be fit for a movie.
On the occasion of March 8, prominent executives, politicians, and institutions prepared fancy visuals, printed posters, and spoke at length about the value placed on women. Elaborate speeches were prepared. It was reminded that paradise lies at the feet of mothers. The Turkish woman was praised to the skies. But on March 8, International Women's Day, women who wanted to shout out their experiences were not allowed into the squares. But never mind, the Turkish woman was killed by her husband, boyfriend, father, or brothers and fitted into coffins.
On March 9, in Antalya, 26-year-old Nurse Sevcan was butchered with a cleaver by the man she had married 2 months ago. Women did not allow her coffin to be carried on men's shoulders in protest of the male-perpetrated murder. She was carried to her final resting place on the shoulders of women.
While we were asking, "How can such brutality exist?" news of a murder came from İzmir. In the Ödemiş district, 27-year-old Fatma Kara was beaten to death by her ex-boyfriend in the middle of the street. The ex-boyfriend, O.G., murdered Fatma by repeatedly slamming the young woman's head against the ground. Moreover, it turned out that the ex-boyfriend had previously assaulted the young woman and that a restraining order had been issued for this reason.
Women cannot protect themselves, but as seen in this incident, the state cannot protect women either. Let no one romanticize the Turkish woman, because no one values or protects women. Nearly 40 years have passed since the late Duygu Asena wrote her book "The Woman Has No Name" in 1987. The woman still has no name, but she also has no security.
If you see a man saying, "The Turkish woman is so valuable, the Turkish woman is so precious..." again, you would be justified in hitting him right in the mouth with a shovel.
