In a country where journalism is not free, the people are not free either

Our colleague Suat Toktaş has been arrested. Kürşat Oğuz, Barış Pehlivan, Serhan Asker, and Seda Selek have been released under judicial control. Turkey has become one of the world's largest prisons for journalists.

Yet, every citizen has the right to know the truth and to access accurate news. No one can take this away from them. However, unfortunately, it is not just our access to accurate news that has been ripped away, but also our desire for happiness, peace, and a humane life.

The country is unhappy. Its people are unhappy. Its youth are unhappy. Poverty, unemployment, successive disasters, and the deaths we could not prevent due to negligence are causing us deep pain.

Journalists who reveal the truth are being shown the path to prison. Yet, Article 10 of the Constitution states that everyone is equal before the law!

What is essential is not the rule of the powerful, but the rule of law. Journalism, which is the voice of the voiceless, cannot be imprisoned. We will not be silent until all journalists are free.

Continuing to practice journalism under the conditions of this country means risking imprisonment. For this reason, I do not find the conflict between Halk TV and Sözcü TV to be right.

Today is a day for solidarity. Today is a day for unity. The public needs to see this unity and feel this togetherness. Let us put our egos aside and demonstrate professional solidarity. Today is the time to be one heart, one voice.

What is essential is journalism!

What difference does it make if the name is Sözcü, Halk, or Tele 1?
