It was 106 years ago…
Mustafa Kemal Atatürk set foot in Samsun to become a beacon of hope for a people suffocating under occupation.
That day
Was not only the beginning of a liberation, but also the day a new path was charted.
That path was the path of modernity.
That path was secularism, equality, science, and freedom.
Today, the date is May 19 again. But the country's landscape is completely different.
In recent days, at Boğaziçi University, a religious official invited by the Islamic Studies Club wounded hearts with the words, “A 6-year-old child can get married.”
They did not react to him, but to the students who protested these words.
97 students were detained, and 6 were arrested.
A young person is now in prison for saying, “I cannot remain silent for the children of this country.”
This is Turkey…
The year is 2025.
A country that founded secularism is debating child abuse as a “difference of interpretation.”
University youth are being punished when they take to the streets to claim their rights.
They are standing up not only for their own futures, but for children who cannot yet speak or defend themselves. Yet, they are told to be silent.
When Atatürk gifted May 19 to the youth, he did not just give them a holiday,
he also gave them a responsibility:
To not allow this country to be dragged into darkness.
Today, every young person who defends secularism, children's rights, and the right of women to live,
is actually upholding Atatürk's legacy…
To those who think Generation Z is “directionless,” here is the answer;
Those young people have the power to put this country, which has lost its course, back on Atatürk's path.
Because their compass;
Is pointed toward science, freedom, and equality…
May 19 is not just a holiday,
it is a reminder:
Either we will start walking again,
or we will be silent spectators of a country drifting in darkness.
We still have hope:
The Generation Z that objects, questions, and does not remain silent!
Those young people are resisting not only for their own futures, but for the entire country.
Atatürk entrusted this country to the youth because he saw in their hearts not submission, but courage.
As long as the youth are standing, there is hope.
May 19 will live forever through the resistance of the youth!
