The appetite of the insatiable is like a giant sinkhole!

For the past few weeks, I have been away from the political agenda, filming a new documentary about the “Water” crisis we will soon experience.

I have rarely been able to check social media. The agenda in the field is very different from the one in the city!

The farmer is hungry. They can no longer make a living through farming. In Turkey, the number of farmers has decreased by 55 percent in the last 10 years. With inflation rising above 70 percent, the input prices that are critically important for farmers have skyrocketed. There are few incentives for agriculture. On top of that, when the effects of the climate crisis and drought are added, they are going through a very severe period of livelihood hardship.

The state providing water in limited quantities is a new problem!

We filmed at the dams. We witnessed how much the water levels have receded.

The Minister of Agriculture’s statement that “we will be left without water in 2030” is correct. If you care about the water crisis, why do you still insist on allowing the production of corn, which consumes the most water, in the Konya Plain?

The sinkholes, large and small, numbering 600 in the Konya Plain, are the result of this country’s misguided agricultural policies!

The lives of the farmers producing corn in the Karapınar district of Konya and their families are in danger. A new sinkhole could form at any moment.

It could even swallow their villages. Because of the water drawn from underground to irrigate sugar beets and corn, water no longer comes out even from a depth of 130 meters in the Konya Plain.

When I went to the bottom of the sinkholes, the film Burning Days (Kurak Günler) came to my mind.

How beautifully it described the hypocrisy in the country, the fact that no success goes unpunished, and the deterioration of the human fabric in the country.

The sinkholes are also a metaphor for today’s Turkey.

Human life has become the most worthless thing! Justice is not functioning, the rule of law has ended, the economy has collapsed, our national assets have been sold off, and agriculture has reached the point of extinction.

Education has hit rock bottom, workers are unable to breathe, prices have spiraled out of control, and retirees are struggling to survive.

Young people are looking for opportunities to leave the country.

If there is no insistence on an early election, the appetite of the insatiable will swallow Turkey like a giant sinkhole!
