I spoke with his father, Mustafa Atalay.
In my program on Tele 1, he held back tears as he read his son Can’s message and added:
"We want to be reunited with our child. In our last meeting, Can told us, ‘There is no joy for us until everyone who is unjustly imprisoned is released.’ We raised our child by putting books in his hands… We instilled in Can a love for humanity and a sense of solidarity… He could have earned a lot of money if he had wanted to, but his family upbringing pushed him down this path…"
Mustafa Atalay had hidden his helplessness and longing behind his son’s fighting spirit. My eyes filled with tears as I listened.
I thought of the people who are unjustly imprisoned, separated from their families for political reasons and out of a sense of vengeance, their lives stolen.
How could a government be so oppressive toward its own people?
*
Great crimes are pregnant with great oppression…
Imperialist Islam seizes power with the intention of never leaving.
*
The narrative the AKP has constructed to ensure it never leaves power no longer fits the mold.
There is a government that does not recognize the laws or the constitution of the country it governs, and that uses the judiciary and prisons to suppress the opposition.
It is an anti-democratic order where the legislative, executive, and judiciary—that is, the national will, the entire state apparatus, and the crime-and-punishment system—are under the initiative of a single person.
You cannot speak of law, human rights, property rights, or personal security…
A decay where caliphate supporters are favored, and where those who commit assault go unpunished if they are from the Palace…
*
From the business world to the courthouse, from universities to football players… A system of plunder where state resources, state opportunities, and the treasury belonging to the nation are placed at the disposal of a rampant minority…
At least half of the country objects to this order.
Even in the last election, which was gifted to Erdoğan amidst great incompetence, the ‘official objection’ was 47.8 percent…
Erdoğan received 27,834,692 votes.
Kılıçdaroğlu received 25,504,552 votes. In a total of—approximately—54 million votes, there is a difference of 2.5 million votes.
Despite this result, Erdoğan and his supporters continue to see themselves as the sole owners of the country, standing above the laws and the constitution.
Erdoğan and his team want to keep their voter base, which is on the verge of disintegration, together through a show of force.
The reason Can Atalay remains imprisoned and his parliamentary status was revoked, despite the clear and indisputable articles of the constitution that the entire country is obliged to follow, is this cruel show of force.
*
What should be done?
The opposition must be brave…
Those who believe in democracy must act with courage…
Forces that believe in democracy will protest those who openly violate the constitution and those who attempt to abolish the constitution by carrying out a judicial coup through the government, using the authority derived from their democratic rights.
The CHP’s constitutional rally will be held without anyone getting hurt.
The state must and will take the necessary precautions at the highest level.
The issue has long since surpassed Can Atalay and has turned into a catastrophe where the state’s institutions and rules are in the process of collapsing.
CHP Group Deputy Chairman Gökhan Günaydın stated that the rally, which was postponed due to our martyrs, could be held next week.
Despite all the threats from those in the Palace, this rally must be held.
The government is primarily responsible for the security of democratic actions.
