According to a BBC report, Webb's Auction House stated that the feather was initially expected to fetch around $3,000.

The statement noted that at $28,000, it is the most expensive feather ever sold at auction, adding that a previous feather from this bird had sold for approximately $5,000 (8,000 New Zealand dollars).

Leah Morris, Head of Decorative Arts at Webb's Auction House, stated that the condition of the feather, which belonged to the Huia bird—considered "sacred" by New Zealand's indigenous Maori people—is "excellent" and can be preserved for a long time.

According to the Museum of New Zealand, feathers from Huia birds were once a status symbol for the Maori people, but the fact that these birds became targets for collectors led to their extinction.

The Huia bird was last sighted in 1907.
