Composed and written by Richard Wagner and considered his first masterpiece, the opera "The Flying Dutchman" is meeting art lovers at the Atatürk Cultural Center (AKM) Türk Telekom Opera Hall under the direction of famous German director Sebastian Welker.

First staged in the world in 1843 at the Königliches Hoftheater in Dresden and based on a story that never ceases to fascinate even those who do not believe in legends, the drama tells of an irrational journey in which the Dutchman, an otherworldly, supernatural being, seeks redemption through the love of a faithful woman.

The Flying Dutchman (Der Holländer) is a captain condemned to roam the seas forever with his cursed ghost ship and his entire crew, searching for true love. Only the love of a woman will save the sailor, who is allowed to step on land once every seven years. Every woman who married him and then betrayed him has fallen victim to his curse. This time, when his seven years are up, he sets foot on land just outside a Norwegian village.

Here he meets a man named Daland, and after giving him gold and jewels in exchange for a night's lodging, he learns that Daland has a daughter. Will this girl, named Senta, be the "perfect love" that will save him from his dire situation?

Four themes that dominate Wagner's other works form the cornerstones of the plot in The Flying Dutchman: longing for death, a woman's willingness to sacrifice, love-death, and redemption.

The Istanbul State Opera and Ballet Orchestra will be conducted by İbrahim Yazıcı, with set design by Efter Tunç, costume design by Serdar Başbuğ, lighting design by Yakup Çartık, and choreography by Emre Karaca. The IDOB Choir is directed by Volkan Akkoç.

In the performances; Alper Göçeri / Murat Güney will be on stage in the role of "Der Holländer"; Perihan N. Artan / Evren Ekşi as "Senta"; Umut Tarık Akça / Göktuğ Alpaşar as "Daland"; Efe Kışlalı / Hüseyin Likos as "Erik"; Aylin Ateş / Deniz Likos as "Mary"; and Berk Dalkılıç / Yoel Keşap as "Der Steuermann".

The work will be staged at the AKM Türk Telekom Opera Stage on October 12-17 and November 2-6.
