1 million lira heist via fake police trap: Suspect caught in Istanbul
A suspect accused of defrauding a young Syrian national by posing as a police officer in Manisa has been detained in Istanbul following a police investigation and subsequently arrested by the court.
In an incident that occurred in the Atatürk neighborhood of Manisa's Yunusemre district, 19-year-old Syrian citizen R.K. was targeted by an unidentified individual who called him on the phone. The suspect, posing as a law enforcement officer, convinced R.K. by saying, "Your father has been arrested; we need to take all the jewelry and cash in the house for examination." Panicked, the young man handed over gold and cash worth approximately 1 million lira found in their home to the person who came to the door.
After realizing the fraud, R.K. immediately reported the incident to the police. A special team formed by the Manisa Provincial Police Department's Fraud Bureau deepened the investigation and examined security cameras in the area one by one. As a result of the meticulous work, it was determined that the person who received the jewelry and money was Emre Gümüş (27). It was established that the suspect had moved to Istanbul shortly after.
The team traveled to Istanbul and apprehended Emre Gümüş in an operation, taking him into custody. It was learned that in his initial statement at the police station, the suspect claimed he had given the stolen money to people he did not know and did not know where it had gone.
Following his interrogation, Emre Gümüş was brought to Manisa and referred to the courthouse. The on-duty Criminal Court of Peace decided to arrest the suspect on charges of 'qualified fraud'.
