10 people had been detained: New development in the armed attack at the Bursa Courthouse

The police procedures for the suspects detained following the armed attack at the Bursa Courthouse, which took place in the 6th High Criminal Court hearing room, have been completed.

The suspects, including the perpetrator Kemal (52) and his son Tolga Ergün (21), two police officers, and a lawyer, were transferred to the courthouse under extensive security measures. Special operations police also took security measures in and around the courthouse building.

The interrogation of the suspects by the prosecutor's office is ongoing.

WHAT HAD HAPPENED?

On September 23, 2023, 3 people were injured in an armed brawl between some customers and employees at an entertainment venue in a shopping mall in the Odunluk neighborhood of the Nilüfer district.

On December 13, the parties were brought to the Bursa 6th High Criminal Court for the second hearing of the case in which Mertcan and his father Köksal Akça were being tried while in custody.

While the defense attorney's statements were being taken, shots were fired from the side of Tolga Ergün—who was injured in the brawl, lives in a wheelchair due to being left disabled in that incident, and worked as a waiter at the entertainment venue—toward the defendants.

In the attack, which was carried out with a gun smuggled into the courthouse by Ergün's father, Kemal Ergün, by hiding it in his son's wheelchair, the defendants Mertcan and Köksal Akça lost their lives.

One of the two gendarmerie personnel who were seriously wounded in the same attack, Specialist Sergeant Nurettin Yaşar (26), was martyred on December 14 at the hospital where he had been taken.
