12 defendants face judge for insulting the President at Palestine rally

12 defendants appeared before a judge for the first time regarding the determination that slogans containing insults directed at President Erdoğan were chanted during a pro-Palestine rally held in Bakırköy on July 22.

The hearing, held behind closed doors at the Bakırköy 7th Criminal Court of First Instance, was attended by the detained defendant İsmail Çelik, 11 defendants who are being tried without arrest—one of whom was under house arrest—and their lawyers.

Announcing its interim decision, the court ruled to send the case file to the Duty Court for the evaluation of the defense lawyers' request for the recusal of the judge, the release of the detained defendant İsmail Çelik with a travel ban, the lifting of the house arrest measure for defendant Barış Onur Deniz, and the continuation of judicial control measures for the other defendants who are being tried without arrest, and adjourned the hearing for the completion of missing matters.
