19 more prisons opened in the 100th year of the Republic

In the 100th year of the founding of the Republic, the government opened 19 more prisons and is preparing to open 20 more.

According to information reported in Sözcü, there are a total of 405 prisons in Turkey, including 274 closed prisons, 99 open prisons, 11 closed prisons for women, 8 open prisons for women, 9 closed prisons for children, and 4 juvenile detention centers. 19 prisons were opened this year. According to the Ministry of Justice 2024 budget proposal, the target for next year is 12 new prisons. In 2025, 8 more prisons will be opened. 13 billion 682 million 900 thousand liras will be paid for the new prisons in 2024, and 19 billion 20 million 461 thousand liras in 2025.

The space per convict and detainee in prisons was 24.03 square meters in 2023. It is planned to increase this figure to 24.79 square meters in 2024, and to 25.24 square meters in 2025 and 2026.

While the number of files processed under probation in 2022 was 707 thousand 280, it was projected that this number would reach 650 thousand in 2023. The 2024 target was stated as 700 thousand, the 2025 estimate as 720 thousand, and the 2026 estimate as 750 thousand.

835 FILES PER JUDGE AND 1,508 PER PROSECUTOR

According to data in the Ministry's 2024 budget, the number of judges per 100 thousand people in 2023 was 18.06, and the number of prosecutors was 8.68. The average duration of criminal cases was determined to be 248 days, the average duration of civil cases was 236 days, and the average duration of administrative cases was 198 days. The number of files per judge was 835, and the number of files per prosecutor was 1,508.

The Ministry aims to increase the number of judges per 100 thousand people to 19 and the number of prosecutors to 9 for the year 2024.
