2 released in 'corruption' investigation into IMM
Businesspeople Ali İlbak and Yusuf İlbak, who were being held in custody as part of the "corruption" investigation into the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM), have been released under judicial control measures, including a "travel ban" and "house arrest."
The "corruption" investigation conducted by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office into suspects, including Ekrem İmamoğlu—who was removed from his post as IMM Mayor following his arrest—on charges of "managing a criminal organization," "membership in a criminal organization," "extortion," "bribery," "qualified fraud," "unlawful acquisition of personal data," and "rigging a tender," is ongoing.
During the monthly detention review held yesterday for Ali İlbak and Yusuf İlbak, who were arrested on March 23 as part of the investigation, the prosecution requested the continuation of the suspects' detention.
The Istanbul 4th Criminal Judgeship of Peace, however, decided to release Ali İlbak and Yusuf İlbak under judicial control measures, specifically a "travel ban" and "house arrest."
The ruling stated that although findings indicated a strong suspicion of the crimes charged based on the evidence currently in the file, it was concluded that at this stage of the investigation, judicial control measures would be more proportionate.
Meanwhile, it was learned that businessman Murat İlbak was also released on June 2 by the Istanbul 6th Criminal Judgeship of Peace under judicial control measures, including a "travel ban" and "house arrest."
In the release decision for Murat İlbak, it was noted that the nature and character of the alleged crime, the content of his statement to the prosecutor, the fact that he has a fixed residence, the stage of the investigation, and the time he has spent in detention were taken into consideration.
