While claims that certain districts in Turkey will become provinces frequently occupy the agenda, it has emerged from the latest data released by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) that this process is subject to specific criteria. For a district to attain provincial status, it must meet the requirements of "a population of 100,000 and a distance of 30 km from the provincial center."

THE REQUIREMENT OF 100,000 POPULATION AND 30 KM DISTANCE
According to TÜİK data, for a district to become a province, not only are population and distance criteria considered, but many other factors such as economic indicators, educational opportunities, transportation infrastructure, social services, and social structure are also evaluated.
However, the most fundamental requirements are that the district must have a population of at least 100,000 and be located 30 kilometers away from the provincial center.
