3 arrests in scandal where Beren lost her life

13-year-old Beren Su Bolat, who resided in the Fevzi Çakmak neighborhood of Ankara's Sincan district, became trapped between the 5th and 6th floors due to a malfunction in an elevator she boarded at an apartment building where she was visiting a friend.

During the fire department's rescue operation, Beren Su fell into the elevator shaft and lost her life, while her friend was rescued.

"STATEMENT FROM THE CHIEF PUBLIC PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE REGARDING THE INVESTIGATION"

An investigation was launched by the Ankara West Chief Public Prosecutor's Office against 3 fire department personnel for the crime of 'causing death and injury by negligence' in relation to Beren Su's death.

The following statement was made today regarding the investigation conducted by the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office:

"In the investigation initiated by our Chief Public Prosecutor's Office regarding the incident on July 23, 2024, in the Fevzi Çakmak neighborhood of Sincan district, where a child named B.S.B. fell into the elevator shaft and lost her life during a rescue operation by fire crews for children named T.E.D. and B.S.B. who were trapped in an apartment elevator, individuals named E.A., B.Y., and B.B. were taken into custody on October 14, 2024, under the instruction of our Chief Public Prosecutor's Office. This followed the rejection of the suspects' appeal against the Ankara Governorship's decision to grant permission for the investigation, which was issued upon our Chief Public Prosecutor's Office's letter dated July 25, 2024, regarding the fire department suspects who were determined to be at fault in the incident according to the expert report obtained.

Within the scope of the investigation, the suspects E.A., B.Y., and B.B., who were brought to our Chief Public Prosecutor's Office on the same day, were arrested by the Ankara West Duty Magistrate's Court, to which they were referred after their statements, on the charge of 'causing death and injury by negligence' in accordance with the request."
