3 international agreements approved in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey
Three legislative proposals regarding the approval of international agreements were passed in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) General Assembly.
In the General Assembly, the first item discussed was the Draft Law on Amending the Law Supplementing the Law on the Approval of the Third Protocol to the General Agreement on Privileges and Immunities of the Council of Europe.
Taking the floor on the proposal, Saadet Party Istanbul Deputy Birol Aydın emphasized that what is said would only have value if cooperation with Gaza is increased, stating, "We will expose the double standards of international institutions, but besides this, we must also take steps that will make our country strong in order to put an end to this double standard. To build a fair and new world, we can only start the construction of a fair world by building a livable Turkey, a re-great Turkey."
İYİ Party Muğla Deputy Metin Ergun explained that as Turkey, we must possess a strategic vision in our foreign policy choices that is guided by historical, geographical, and economic realities and aligned with national interests.
Ergun said, "Efforts should be made to build our relations with our neighbors in line with our national interests and through peaceful means."
MHP Kahramanmaraş Deputy Zuhal Karakoç Dora stated that Turkey has become a powerful actor in the international arena with its increasing influence in regional and global politics in recent years, commenting, "The role it plays, especially in the Middle East, Africa, and Europe, has been reinforced by economic and strategic collaborations. In this context, our relations with the Council of Europe Development Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development are of great importance both for our country's interests and for regional stability."
Underlining that Turkey is an effective mediator in the Ukraine crisis and has demonstrated peaceful mediation, Dora added, "Our good relations with both Ukraine and Russia have been decisive in the success of the role Turkey has played in this process. In particular, Turkey's mediation in the Grain Corridor Agreement has made a significant contribution to preventing a global food crisis by ensuring the continuation of grain exports via the Black Sea. This situation has once again revealed Turkey's strategic importance in the international arena."
DEM Party Diyarbakır Deputy Sevilay Çelenk commented on the Paris 2024 Olympic Games opening ceremony, saying, "In the Turkey of the 1960s and 1970s, Bülent Ersoy and Zeki Müren appeared in outfits more flamboyant than those seen here. These snapshots are being cherry-picked, and an Olympic opening ceremony that reveals the immense intellectual, philosophical, and artistic accumulation of the French in Paris through a wide variety of other performances over many hours is being condemned because of this."
AK Party Group Deputy Chairman Leyla Şahin Usta and some AK Party deputies reacted to Çelenk's remarks. Usta replied, "We will not watch it, and we will not let it be watched. Defending LGBT is not intellectualism."
CHP Istanbul Deputy Yunus Emre reacted to the appointment of Metin Feyzioğlu as ambassador to Prague and Yasin Ekrem Serim as ambassador to Nicosia.
Following the discussions, in addition to the Draft Law on Amending the Law Supplementing the Law on the Approval of the Third Protocol to the General Agreement on Privileges and Immunities of the Council of Europe, the Draft Law on the Approval of the Board of Governors Resolutions No. 259 and 260 Regarding Amendments to the Articles of Agreement of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and the Draft Law on the Approval of the Free Trade Agreement Between Turkey and Ukraine and Authorizing the President to Directly Approve Amendments to the Annexes of the Agreement were accepted.
After the legislative proposals were accepted, Deputy Speaker of the Grand National Assembly Bekir Bozdağ adjourned the session to reconvene today at 14:00.
