400 million fine for spam messages

The Ministry of Trade established the Commercial Electronic Message Complaint System in 2015, which has issued nearly 400 million liras in fines within 8 years.

In order to find a solution to the problem that began with the rise of unwanted commercial messages following the widespread use of smartphones, the Ministry of Trade launched the Commercial Electronic Message Complaint System (TİSS) in 2015.

According to the report in Webtekno, a total of 866 thousand 164 complaints were recorded through this system between 2015 and the end of 2023. The vast majority of these complaints consisted of SMS messages.

According to the Ministry of Trade's activity report, 77.08 percent of the reported messages originated from SMS, 20.9 percent from voice calls, and 2.02 percent from email transmissions. The total amount of fines imposed during this period reached nearly 400 million liras, and these fines covered all unwanted messages.

Additionally, the Electronic Commerce Information System (ETBİS), developed to register e-commerce sites, became operational in 2017. As of last year, 35 thousand 327 businesses and 42 thousand 76 websites had registered with the system.
