FIRST STATEMENT FROM THE GOVERNOR

Elazığ Governor Numan Hatipoğlu stated in his first remarks following the earthquake that there were no negative reports.

The statement made by Hatipoğlu on his social media account is as follows:

"Our investigations are ongoing in the area regarding the earthquake felt in our Elazığ city center. There are no negative reports received as of yet."

MINISTER YERLİKAYA: TEAMS HAVE BEGUN FIELD SURVEYS

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, who made a statement on his social media account after the earthquake, said that field surveys have begun.

Yerlikaya stated the following:

"A 5.0 magnitude earthquake has occurred in Elazığ. All teams from AFAD and our relevant institutions have immediately begun field surveys. As of now, there are no negative situations. I extend my best wishes to our citizens affected by the earthquake. May God protect our country and our nation from disasters."

IS IT AN AFTERSHOCK OF THE FEBRUARY 6 OR 2020 EARTHQUAKE?

Prof. Dr. Şükrü Ersoy made the following assessments:

"The earthquake in Elazığ is not an aftershock of the 2020 earthquake or the February 6 earthquakes; it needs to be examined in detail.

A 5.0 magnitude earthquake is not a destructive earthquake. It is a very noticeable earthquake.

Until now, we were discussing these aftershocks to the west of Lake Hazar. This is not like that. This is to the east of Lake Hazar, a new location. It is on the East Anatolian Fault line. It is not an aftershock.

After the 2020 Elazığ earthquake, one of the stress points was towards the east of Lake Hazar. Viewed from this perspective, it is a new earthquake. It should be considered a new earthquake, not an aftershock of 2020 and 2023. The Kovancılar earthquake had occurred further east. This is between the two. We will monitor any potential aftershocks and provide more robust interpretations."

"I DO NOT EXPECT A DISASTER"

Earthquake expert Prof. Dr. Naci Görür also made statements on his social media account following the earthquake in Elazığ. In his post, Görür included the following expressions:

"A 5.1 magnitude earthquake occurred in Elazığ/Şehsuvar. The earthquake is on the EAF (East Anatolian Fault), close to the Keban Dam. The earthquake energy that would create a major disaster in the region has largely been exhausted by earthquakes from Malatya to Karlıova-Göynük. Today's earthquake is related to the energy transfer of the February 6 earthquakes. I do not expect a disaster"
