5.9 magnitude earthquake near Malatya: Felt in surrounding provinces

A strong earthquake has occurred in the region where the February 6 earthquakes took place. The earthquake, which was felt primarily in Diyarbakır and Elazığ, also affected Malatya, Adıyaman, and Gaziantep.

MALATYA MAYOR: WE ARE INVESTIGATING

Making statements following the earthquake, Malatya Mayor Sami Er said, ''I am at the crisis center, we gathered immediately. There is some panic. We do not have any reports of negative incidents yet, we are investigating.''

SCHOOLS EVACUATED

Malatya Governor Seddar Yavuz announced that schools have been evacuated and that classes will not be held in schools today.

STATEMENT FROM AFAD

AFAD stated that the magnitude of the Malatya-centered earthquake was 5.9.

ONE-DAY BREAK IN EDUCATION

It was announced that education has been suspended for 1 day following the earthquake.

EFFORTS ARE ONGOING

Malatya Metropolitan Municipality stated that field scans are continuing and released the following statement:

We convey our best wishes to all my fellow citizens affected by the 5.9 magnitude earthquake centered in Kale, Malatya.

Immediately following the earthquake, all our teams are continuing their field scans. There are no negative reports received by our command center as of now.

Our field scans are continuing.

NO LOSS OF LIFE OR PROPERTY

Following the 5.9 magnitude #earthquake that occurred in the Kale district of Malatya at 10:46, AFAD announced that there was no loss of life or property.

30 AFTERSHOCKS OCCURRED

According to information on the website of the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD), 30 aftershocks occurred following the 5.9 magnitude earthquake at 10:46.

It was determined that the aftershocks occurred in the range of 1.2 to 3 in magnitude.
