A disaster waiting to happen: New details on the school massacre in Kahramanmaraş

New details have emerged regarding the school attack in Kahramanmaraş that claimed the lives of 10 people in recent days. According to the Parent-Teacher Association President Hülya Çevik, the psychological problems of the student attacker, İsa Aras Mersinli, were known in advance and he had been closely monitored for some time. However, it is stated that the process was interrupted when the assistant principal, Alparslan Yıldırım, who checked the student's bag every day and continued his psychological monitoring, was transferred to another school a month ago.

Some parents at the school claimed that Mersinli's family used their influence to cover up some of his negative behaviors in the past. One parent alleged that the attacker had recently harmed himself, but the incident was not recorded in an official report because his father is a police chief.

It has also emerged that Mersinli had planned the attack months in advance and shared these plans in digital environments. According to a foreign friend's account, the attacker introduced himself as a woman on social media platforms such as Discord and Reddit, declared that he had homosexual tendencies, and made posts multiple times stating, "I am going to carry out a school attack." However, those around him did not take these words seriously, thinking they were jokes.

It was learned that the digital communities Mersinli was a part of were suspended after the incident. Additionally, information that his father, Uğur Mersinli, followed adult profiles with inappropriate content on his social media accounts was also shared as part of the investigation.

"HE DREW ATTENTION WITH HIS BEHAVIOR"

14-year-old Ertuğrul Korkmaz, who lost a relative in the attack, described the attacker's strange demeanor. Emphasizing that İsa Aras had gone to Poland through the Erasmus program because his English was good, Korkmaz stated, "He had psychological problems and stayed away from those around him. When he was in the 8th grade, he stopped coming to school, and we heard he was addicted to games. He was spending hours on the computer every day. He would just stare at the teachers for minutes on end," he said.

While security and psychological counseling processes at the school are expected to be scrutinized following the attack, the chain of negligence that led to the tragedy has caused widespread repercussions in the public eye.
