A new era in traffic fines: Stricter sanctions on the Parliament's agenda
A legislative proposal that envisions significantly increasing traffic fines will be at the center of the Parliament's agenda this week. The regulation introduces many severe penalties for drivers.
In the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, discussions on a legislative proposal aimed at increasing traffic fines will continue at an intense pace in the new week. With the new regulations included in the proposal, of which the first 23 articles have already been accepted, both fines are increasing and stricter measures are being introduced for drivers.
Within the scope of the proposal, if the urban speed limit is exceeded by 46-55 kilometers, the driver's license will be confiscated for 30 days. If the speed limit is exceeded by 56-65 kilometers, the penalty will last for 60 days, and if it is exceeded by more than 66 kilometers, it will last for 90 days.
In addition, vehicle owners who do not yield to ambulances, fire trucks, or forest fire response vehicles will be subject to an administrative fine of 46 thousand liras. Drivers who follow another vehicle with the intent to attack and get out of their vehicle will be fined 180 thousand liras and their licenses will be confiscated for two months. Those who cause an accident as a result of a red light violation will also be banned from driving for 60 days.
DISCIPLINE WILL BE ENSURED WITH HIGH FINES
Drivers who use mobile phones behind the wheel will now face a fine of 5 thousand liras. The penalty for driving under the influence of alcohol will be increased to 25 thousand liras. Furthermore, individuals who post images on the internet or social media that encourage the violation of traffic rules will also pay a sanction of 25 thousand liras.
A much higher sanction is in store for those who use flashing lights (çakar) without authorization. These individuals will be subject to an administrative fine of 276 thousand liras, with the aim of preventing unauthorized use.
The new regulations are expected to provide a major deterrent for life and property safety in traffic. It is planned that the entire legislative proposal will be discussed and enacted in the General Assembly of the Parliament in a short time.
