Aftershock warning from Prof. Dr. Tüysüz: He announced the magnitude!
The 5.1-magnitude earthquake centered in the Gemlik Gulf was felt primarily in Istanbul, as well as in Yalova, Bilecik, and surrounding provinces. Geologist Prof. Dr. Tüysüz stated, "If the earthquake magnitude is 5.1, there could be aftershocks reaching up to 4.5."
Evaluating the 5.1-magnitude earthquake that occurred in the Marmara region at 10:42 AM and was felt in Istanbul and surrounding provinces, Tüysüz warned against aftershocks.
Prof. Dr. Okan Tüysüz, in his statement regarding the earthquake during a live broadcast on NTV, noted the following:
"One branch passes through Düzce, Adapazarı, and Gölcük, and extends into the Sea of Marmara—where we expect a major earthquake—all the way to the Gulf of Saros. This is a fault that produces an earthquake roughly every 250-300 years. We expect the earthquake we have been discussing for years in Istanbul to occur on this. The second branch passes south of Pamukova and Lake Iznik, enters the Gulf of Gemlik, and after continuing through the sea, extends from Bandırma to the Gulf of Edremit. However, major earthquakes occur on this branch at very long intervals. When this branch last ruptured is a matter of debate. Therefore, when it enters the Gulf of Gemlik, it splits into several branches. For this reason, we do not yet sufficiently know which fault ruptured or which branch produced this earthquake. Once we understand that, we will have the chance to make a better interpretation. If the earthquake magnitude is 5.1, there could be aftershocks reaching up to 4.5."
