Aggravated life sentence for the defendant who killed dentist Şeyma Biran

The trial of defendants Ziya Ersoy (52) and Abdullah Artut (42), who were accused of stabbing dentist Şeyma Biran (64) to death with 21 stab wounds in her office in Kadıköy on May 22, 2022, continued. The verdict hearing held at the Anatolian 18th High Criminal Court was attended by the detained defendant Ziya Ersoy, the non-detained defendant Abdullah Artut, and the lawyers of the parties.

"IT IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR ME TO HAVE SUDDENLY TURNED TO THEFT AND MURDER AT 51"

Given the floor at the hearing, Ziya Ersoy said, "Şeyma Biran said, 'You have a very strong spirit, you need to draw a lot of energy from the cosmos but you cannot, your chakras are closed. I have my stones in the other room, I will go there to get strength for 5 minutes and come back, our other doctor is a reincarnation expert, we can have it done for you for free.'"

"Then she came to me and said, 'You have come before as a dog, not as a man, you have come as a woman. Arif Bey will look at it in detail when he arrives, but these are what I see.'"

"There was a tropical scent coming from her hands. Meanwhile, as I reached for the towel to wipe my sweat, the knife under the towel caught my eye. Suddenly, my eyes went dark, and I lost consciousness. When I came to, I realized that Şeyma Biran was dead on the floor."

"I did not even take anything worth 1 TL. It is impossible for me to have suddenly turned to theft and murder at 51. I am sorry for everything. I lost my mother during this process. I am also a victim," he stated.

Non-detained defendant Abdullah Artut said, "Ziya Ersoy told me, 'I argued with two young men from the East while getting off the ferry. I hit one of them in the tooth, and my hand was cut.' He took some things out of the bag he had with him and gave them to me. 'Can you throw these in the trash? They are bloody because of the fight, I don't want my mother to see them,' he said.

I took the bag and threw it along with its contents into the trash can in front of the shop door. When I returned inside, I saw a knife on the table. Ziya said, 'I just bought this knife, I would have liked to give it to you as a gift, but I will take it home. Let it stay with you for a few days, then I will take it,' and he put it in a sock and gave it to me.

I left the knife under the table. I did not question why he gave the knife inside a sock, and I was not curious," he said.

Announcing its verdict, the court panel sentenced defendant Ziya Ersoy to aggravated life imprisonment for the crime of 'intentional killing of a woman to facilitate the commission of a crime' and to 11 years in prison for the crime of 'qualified robbery'.

The court acquitted Abdullah Artut, who was being tried for the crime of 'destroying, concealing, or altering evidence of a crime'.
