Akın Gürlek issues statement on 'visit to İmamoğlu' following CHP backlash: He provided a date
Minister of Justice Akın Gürlek explained the obstacle to CHP deputies' visit to İmamoğlu, citing 'administrative changes'.
Journalist Sinan Burhan announced that he asked Minister of Justice Akın Gürlek why CHP deputies were unable to obtain permission to meet with the imprisoned Ekrem İmamoğlu. Speaking about the process that sparked public backlash, Gürlek stated that there was no situation of obstruction.
It was learned that Gürlek explained why the deputies' visit applications were left unanswered by citing "bureaucratic processes".
“Permission will be granted starting next week“
According to what Burhan conveyed, Gürlek stated that there was a waiting period due to the change in ministry and administrative changes, and said that permission would be granted to CHP deputies starting next week.
What happened?
CHP Group Deputy Chairman Gökhan Günaydın announced in a statement at the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) that an "isolation" process had been initiated against IMM Mayor and CHP Presidential Candidate Ekrem İmamoğlu, who is being held in Silivri Prison. Stating that İmamoğlu had not been allowed to meet with any deputies for five days following the appointment of former Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor Akın Gürlek as Minister of Justice, Günaydın criticized the situation with the words, "Do you think you can disconnect Mayor Ekrem from the public by isolating him? These cruelties will backfire on you."
Immediately after taking office, Gürlek had signaled "restrictions" regarding meetings in prisons in his statement. Arguing that there is a "legislative loophole" in the meetings detainees have with their lawyers, Gürlek had summarized his position with the following expressions:
"There is a loophole, especially regarding detainees. Lawyers can meet easily and pass notes. We are thinking of working on this and presenting it to Parliament. Normally, all notes are 'seen' by the prison administration. But because there is a legislative loophole for detainees, notes can easily go outside. We will fix this deficiency."
