AKOM issues warning: Storm and snow expected in Istanbul

Istanbul is preparing for the transition from temperatures well above seasonal norms to days where the effects of winter will be felt. With the expected significant change in weather, authorities are emphasizing the need to be cautious against potential disruptions to transportation and daily life.

As of the morning of January 29, strong winds blowing from the south have increased in intensity across Istanbul. It is stated that wind speeds will reach 30 to 65 km/h at times, which will bring intermittent heavy rainfall. It is reported that while temperatures will feel high during the day due to the lodos, the air will cool down rapidly.

While thermometers in the city show 15 degrees today, a sharp drop is expected by the weekend. According to meteorological reports, locally heavy downpours will be seen in the city on Sunday, with 10 to 20 kilograms of precipitation per square meter possible. On Monday, the temperature will drop to 5 degrees. The rain will turn into sleet during the morning and evening hours. Following this, it is predicted that light snowfall will take effect in Istanbul on Tuesday, with temperatures dropping to 1 degree.

Experts highlighted that the sleet and snowfall at the beginning of the week could lead to disruptions in transportation and a risk of icing. Citizens in traffic and open areas are advised to closely follow developments and avoid going out when necessary.

While it is emphasized that the spring-like weather experienced in recent days will be replaced by a serious winter scene, it is stated that Istanbul will meet with a white blanket, albeit for a short time.
