Haydarlı Mayor Süleyman Çetinkaya was subjected to a knife attack by an identified individual while he was about to enter his home around 19:00 on the evening of July 5. While Çetinkaya was not harmed in the attack, his son, Yusuf Çetinkaya, who was with him, was injured during the ensuing scuffle. It was learned that Yusuf Çetinkaya's injuries are not life-threatening.
Immediately after the incident, gendarmerie teams took the attacker into custody in a short time. An investigation into the incident has been launched, and proceedings regarding the perpetrator are ongoing.
The AK Party Provincial Presidency issued a statement following the incident, condemning the attack. The statement read: “We strongly condemn the heinous attack carried out against our Haydarlı Mayor, Mr. Süleyman Çetinkaya. This cowardly attack against a mayor who came to office with the votes of our nation is unacceptable. We have never stood by an understanding that legitimizes violence, threats, and attacks, and we never will. Our greatest consolation is that our Mayor, Mr. Süleyman Çetinkaya, is in good health following the incident. We convey our best wishes for a speedy recovery to his son, Yusuf Çetinkaya, who was injured during the scuffle, and hope he regains his health as soon as possible. Such attacks against elected officials performing public duties are not only directed at individuals but also at the national will and democratic life. No one is above the law. We have full faith that the incident will be clarified in all its aspects and that those responsible will receive the necessary punishment before the law. As the Provincial Presidency, we once again express that we stand against all forms of violent acts that target our unity and solidarity and aim to disrupt social peace, and we convey our best wishes to our Mayor, Mr. Süleyman Çetinkaya, and his esteemed family.”
