While the evaluation process regarding the election results continues within the AKP, which suffered a defeat in the March 31 Local Elections, the first contacts for new constitutional work will begin the week after the holiday.

According to a report by Hürriyet; Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş will visit the political parties with groups in the Parliament after the holiday to express his intentions. With Kurtulmuş's visit, a new process will be initiated by determining the procedures and principles regarding the new constitutional work.

Topics such as each party preparing its own constitutional proposal or the establishment of a joint commission will be on the table. Following the determination of the working procedures and principles, work on a draft text will begin.

In addition, the Office of the Parliament Speaker will also invite bar associations, non-governmental organizations, trade unions, and the academic community to contribute to the work for the new constitution.

ERDOĞAN'S TERM OF OFFICE

On the other hand, it is being discussed whether the AKP's new constitutional work will include a regulation extending the President's term of office to allow AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to be elected once more. 

While it has been learned from behind-the-scenes reports that this regulation is not viewed favorably, the early election formula stands out as the only alternative for Erdoğan's re-candidacy. AKP officials point to the end of 2027 or the beginning of 2028 as the time for an early election.
