Alarm off the coast of Florya: Emergency calls from two tankers in succession

Emergency calls were received in succession from two tankers sailing off the coast of Florya in the Bakırköy district. According to initial findings, it was learned that one of the tankers was flying the Turkish flag and the other the Azerbaijani flag.

COASTAL SAFETY TEAMS MOBILIZED

Following the distress signals from the ships, teams from the General Directorate of Coastal Safety immediately took action. Upon notification of the incident, rescue units and marine vessels were directed to the area.

CAUSE OF EMERGENCY CALLS INVESTIGATED

No clear information was shared in the initial stage regarding why the two tankers made emergency calls. While authorities continue their investigations at the scene, it was reported that a statement would be made to the public following further developments.

OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM THE MINISTRY

In a statement regarding the matter, the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure reported that contact occurred between two tankers at the Küçükçekmece Anchorage Area. The statement included the following:

“Due to the information received that the 141-meter-long tanker named KALBAJAR and the 115-meter-long tanker named ALATEPE made contact with each other at the Küçükçekmece Anchorage Area, and because the ships are located close to the shore, our land-based rescue team affiliated with our General Directorate of Coastal Safety and our KURTARMA-9 tugboat were immediately dispatched to the scene.”
