In an interview with Sözcü columnist Saygı Öztürk, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya expressed his disapproval of daytime television programs. In his column, Öztürk reported that Yerlikaya stated, "What does this have to do with freedom of the press? Solving crimes is the job of the Ministry of Interior. I do not accept those types of broadcasts on TV; they are a deviation of values."
Sözcü columnist Saygı Öztürk spoke with Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya on the first anniversary of his appointment as minister.
Öztürk reported that when asked for his views on daytime television broadcasts, Yerlikaya said, "They shouldn't take it the wrong way, but I do not like those broadcasts. There are deviations from ethical values in these programs. What is the point of discussing certain things in front of everyone?"
The relevant section of Öztürk's column regarding his conversation with Yerlikaya is as follows:
“Yerlikaya explained that he had assigned chief civil inspectors to investigate allegations of illegal wiretapping on social media, that the work on this matter was nearing completion, and that the report would be submitted to the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office. A simultaneous investigation into the same matter had also been launched by the Prosecutor's Office. The Minister stated that we must hold our tongues on matters that have been referred to the courts. The Minister was reminded of the topics covered in the daytime slots of some television channels and was asked for his opinion.
Ali Yerlikaya said, ‘They shouldn't take it the wrong way, but I do not like those broadcasts,’ and continued his words as follows: ‘There are deviations from ethical values in these programs. What is the point of discussing certain things in front of everyone? What does this have to do with freedom of the press? Solving crimes is the job of the Ministry of Interior. Ensuring justice is served is the job of the Ministry of Justice. Our courts make decisions on our behalf. I do not accept those types of broadcasts on TV; they are a deviation of values.’
It should be noted immediately that the minister will soon announce new initiatives, primarily concerning the issue of violence against women.”
