Allegations of psychological violence at Dokuz Eylül University! Students rise up

It has been reported that the Dean of the Dokuz Eylül University (DEÜ) Faculty of Fine Arts threatened a student who participated in protests inside his office. Students, stating that their peer was subjected to psychological violence, held a protest at the school entrance.

Before the press statement, students chanted slogans such as "You will never walk alone" and "Cowardly Dean," and also chanted "What is a student doing alone in the dean's office?" for one minute.

According to the report in Birgün, the students who issued the press statement said, "A friend of ours encountered the Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts, Hacı Yakup Öztuna, on the faculty stairs while on their way home from the faculty with a banner in their hand that read 'DEÜ GSF Academic Boycott'. Although the banner was closed and tucked under their arm, the Dean took advantage of our friend being alone at that moment; without providing any explanation, he forcibly tugged at the banner and intervened with our friend, saying things like, 'What is this? You cannot enter the school with this.'"

CROSS-EXAMINATION OF A STUDENT

The statement, which noted that their friend was summoned to the Dean's office without any explanation, recorded the following:

"Despite our friend asking 'why' repeatedly, without providing any justification, he told them, 'You come to the office, walk,' and abruptly forced them into the office of the person named [Name Surname] located next to the dean's office. Together with two people inside the room, a cross-examination of our friend was initiated; they immediately took down their name and surname, used the threat of opening an investigation as a tool for intimidation, established dominance over the student, prevented them from speaking under pressure, and applied psychological violence with threatening words."

"WE WILL NOT BOW DOWN"

Stating that this incident was not just an intimidation against one student but an open attack on all students and freedom of expression, the statement included the following remarks:

"The individual named [Name] in the room, against our fellow student who wanted to defend and explain themselves, abused his institutional power and clearly violated the student's constitutional rights with the words: 'The Dean is not your interlocutor; normally you cannot even pass in front of his office! You cannot even enter inside.' Universities are spaces where free thought and expression must be protected. Students exercising their democratic rights is not a crime, but one of the most fundamental rights under constitutional guarantee. We do not accept this lawlessness. We announce to the public that we will follow up on this incident, that we as students are not alone, and that we will not bow down to an atmosphere of pressure."
