Bad news for those using phones behind the wheel: Driver's licenses will be confiscated

Successive hikes in traffic fines and deterrent practices have introduced stricter rules for drivers. With the new traffic regulation that came into effect as of March 25, 2026, law enforcement agencies have launched a "zero tolerance" policy against rule violations.

Within the scope of this regulation, traffic inspections are no longer conducted only from the ground. Rules are also monitored from the air, and are strictly controlled with the help of drones in cities like Edirne. Traffic teams identify drivers who talk or text on their mobile phones while driving, especially through drone-supported operations. Authorities state that the new method provides significant deterrence against instantaneous rule violations.

PENALTY AMOUNTS AND SANCTIONS INCREASED

Drivers found using a mobile phone while behind the wheel are subject to an administrative fine of 5 thousand liras for the first violation. If the same violation is repeated within one year, the fine increases up to 20 thousand liras, and for each repetition, the driver's license is confiscated for 30 days.

RENEWED SEAT BELT FINES

The new regulation does not only cover phone usage. Drivers and passengers who do not wear seat belts in the vehicle are also fined 2 thousand 500 liras. When the same violation is repeated four times in a year, the sanction of license confiscation comes into play. With these penalties, the importance of the safety of both oneself and other passengers in traffic is emphasized.

Thanks to these tightened measures, it is aimed to increase traffic safety and prevent accidents. Authorities continue to warn drivers to follow traffic rules and send the message that the new rules will be implemented meticulously.
