Bahçeli's first statement after Can Atalay's parliamentary membership was revoked: He linked the Constitutional Court to a 'coup'

MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli spoke for the first time regarding the decision to revoke the parliamentary membership of imprisoned Hatay TİP MP Can Atalay in the TBMM. 

While expressing that he found the decision correct, Bahçeli linked the Constitutional Court (AYM) to a coup. Bahçeli also defended Deputy Speaker of the TBMM Bekir Bozdağ.

Bahçeli stated the following:

"With the reading of the fair, equitable, and law-based decision rendered by the 3rd Criminal Chamber of the Court of Cassation regarding Hatay MP Şerafettin Can Atalay, who was convicted within the scope of the Gezi Park trial, at yesterday's session of the TBMM, the individual's parliamentary membership has been revoked; thus, justice has been served.

With the reading of the fair, equitable, and law-based decision rendered by the 3rd Criminal Chamber of the Court of Cassation regarding Hatay MP Şerafettin Can Atalay, who was convicted within the scope of the Gezi Park trial, at yesterday's session of the TBMM, the individual's parliamentary membership has been revoked; thus, justice has been served.

HE LINKED THE CONSTITUTIONAL COURT TO A COUP

The Republic of Turkey is a state of law. The rule of law is binding for everyone. No one has the freedom to commit crimes, the privilege to protect criminals, or the right to disregard a judicial decision by claiming it is a coup. It is the Constitutional Court that is attempting a coup against democracy, our national peace, and our security.

The Grand National Assembly of Turkey, the place where the national will is manifested, has rejected the tutelary, malicious, prejudiced, and politically flawed and painful stance that the Constitutional Court has advanced by leveraging its media power, and has fulfilled the requirements of the finalized court decision within the framework of the second paragraph of Article 84 of the Constitution.

HE DEFENDED BOZDAĞ

I congratulate the Deputy Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, Mr. Bekir Bozdağ, for his courageous, resolute, and uncompromising management, and I share my thanks for his efforts to preserve and defend the dignity of the Veteran Assembly. Those who gathered in front of the presidential podium, banged on the desk covers, and jeered at our Assembly, aspiring to a display of hatred and violence consistent with their nature, are executioners of democracy deserving of condemnation.

The national will has upheld the honor of democracy and law. Those who utter new Gezi provocations following the revocation of Şerafettin Can Atalay's parliamentary membership are in a state of negligence. Those who point to the streets and illegal resistance as the address, and furthermore, those who speak of taking every position against our country, are figures of hostility.

No one should be the perpetrator of a mistake whose cost and consequences will be very heavy. The surrender of Turkey to anarchy and street language is merely a pipe dream. Respect for democracy and law is the fundamental responsibility of everyone, of all of us. Neither history nor the nation will forgive those who act contrary to this responsibility while in the grip of a loss of consciousness."
