Banking criticism from Bora Erdin: High annual fee for a card with a 1 TL limit

Journalist Bora Erdin criticized the credit card policies of banks in a post on his social media account. Erdin stated that a 569 TL annual membership fee was charged to a credit card with a total limit of only 1 TL, characterizing this as an unfair practice.

In his post, Erdin made a striking criticism of the banking system, stating, "Isn't it nice to exceed the limit of a credit card that has a total limit of 1 TL (one Turkish lira in writing) just to charge a 569 TL annual membership fee and then reflect that on the card statement?"

CREDIT CARD FEES ARE A SUBJECT OF DEBATE

Bora Erdin's X post has once again brought to the agenda the debate over how credit card fees are determined by banks and how they are reflected to customers.

Annual fees charged to cards with low limits or those that are never used draw the reaction of many consumers.

While banks defend credit card fees as service charges, consumers complain that these fees are collected in a non-transparent manner. Customers with low card limits or low usage rates, in particular, state that these fees create an unnecessary financial burden.

WHAT DO CONSUMER RIGHTS SAY?

According to the Consumer Law, it is possible to request a refund for credit card fees. However, many customers state that this process is complicated and that banks create difficulties. Experts recommend that customers apply directly to Consumer Arbitration Committees when they encounter such situations.
