Barış Terkoğlu: 'Journalists will not be allowed into the area where the PKK will lay down its arms'

The PKK's disarmament process was discussed on the program titled "How will the cat be skinned?" (Dananın kuyruğu nasıl kopacak?), which aired last night on the YouTube channel "Onlar," featuring Şule Aydın, Murat Ağırel, Barış Pehlivan, Timur Soykan, and Barış Terkoğlu. Following Barış Terkoğlu's remarks, "A group of 30 people will lay down their arms at the foothills of Qandil today, but these images will not be broadcast live. Journalists will not be allowed into the ceremony area. They will be shown the event with a delay via a screen," Barış Pehlivan asked the question, "Why did the journalists go then?"

WHAT HAD HAPPENED?

PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, who was called upon by MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli to "end terrorist acts and dissolve the organization," made the long-awaited call, announcing that the PKK should dissolve itself and all groups should lay down their arms. In his call, Öcalan stated, "I am making this call for disarmament in this climate created by the call made by Mr. Devlet Bahçeli, the will put forward by the President, and the positive approaches of other political parties toward the aforementioned call, and I am assuming the historical responsibility of this call." Öcalan said, "Convene your congress and make a decision for integration with the state and society." 

In addition to the terrorist leader Öcalan's "Peace and Democratic Society" call, a note he sent was also read, stating, "While putting forward this perspective, undoubtedly, in practice, the laying down of arms and the dissolution of the PKK require the recognition of democratic politics and the legal dimension." 

Following Öcalan's statement that the PKK should dissolve itself and all groups should lay down their arms, Qandil stated that they agreed with Öcalan's call and would fulfill its requirements. Qandil also demanded the release of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan.

The separatist terrorist organization PKK declared a ceasefire effective from March 1, emphasizing that no armed force would take action unless there was an attack.

In a new statement on May 9, the PKK announced that it had convened its 12th congress between May 5 and 7, and that the results and the "historical decisions" taken would be shared in the near future. The statement also demanded physical freedom for the terrorist Öcalan, noting that the congress was convened upon Öcalan's call and that the perspectives and proposals presented by Öcalan to the congress were evaluated. 

The statement, which noted that "decisions of historical importance" were taken based on Öcalan's call, said, "Extensive and detailed information and documents regarding the results of the 12th PKK Congress and the decisions taken will be shared with the public very soon, after the results from two different areas are combined." 

The historical statement came on May 12. In a declaration prepared by the PKK announcing that it had laid down its arms and dissolved the organization, it was stated, "The 12th PKK Congress, with the practical process to be managed and conducted by Leader APO, has taken the decisions to dissolve the organizational structure of the PKK and end the method of armed struggle, thereby terminating the activities carried out under the name of the PKK."
