Becoming a teacher has become even harder!

Following deliberations in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) General Assembly, the Teaching Profession Law proposal was accepted and enacted.

According to the enacted proposal, penalties for crimes committed against teachers are set to be increased by half. Teacher candidates will be paid an amount equal to 30,000 times the civil servant monthly coefficient. A 'National Education Academy' will be established under the Ministry of National Education to prepare teacher candidates for the profession, support their development, and facilitate their progress through career steps.

HOW WILL TEACHERS BE SELECTED?

Those to be employed as teachers will be selected from among individuals who have graduated from higher education programs that serve as a source for the teaching profession at at least the undergraduate level, or from foreign higher education programs with accepted equivalency, and who have been successful in the preparatory training.

The qualifications required for those to be employed as teachers in terms of general culture, specialized field training, and professional teaching knowledge, as well as the higher education programs that will serve as sources for teaching fields, will be determined by the Ministry based on these qualifications.

WHAT TRAINING WILL BE PROVIDED AT THE ACADEMY?

The Academy will be a pioneer in preparing teachers for the profession.

It will also serve to support the professional development of teachers and ensure their advancement through career steps.

In this context, the Ministry of National Education will cover the necessary appropriations for the operation of the Academy from its own budget. While the Academy's headquarters is planned to be in Ankara, it will also have centers in many provinces and districts to provide training to teachers.

Candidates to be admitted to the preparatory training will be determined based on their exam score ranking, not exceeding the number of positions authorized for appointment.

At least two written exams will be held for each theoretical course in the preparatory training. Those with an average grade of 60 or above out of 100 in each course will be considered successful.

Those who fail theoretical courses will be granted one additional exam right for each of these courses. Those who score 60 or above in the additional exam will be considered successful in the relevant course. Those who fail any course after the additional exams will be dismissed from the Academy.

To determine the level of success in reflecting the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviors acquired during the preparatory training into the educational environment, the teacher candidate will be subjected to evaluation three times.

This evaluation will be conducted by the training personnel responsible for the practice, the principal of the educational institution where the practice takes place, and the practice teacher, based on the teaching profession competencies determined by the Ministry, using an evaluation form created by the Academy according to teaching appointment fields.

The evaluation score will be determined by taking the arithmetic mean of the scores given in the evaluation forms filled out separately by the training personnel responsible for the practice, the educational institution principal, and the practice teacher.

The practical course success score will be determined by taking 20 percent of the first evaluation score, 30 percent of the second evaluation score, and 50 percent of the third evaluation score.

Teacher candidates with a practical course success score of 70 or above out of 100 will be considered successful. Those who fail the practical courses will be dismissed from the Academy.

At the end of the preparatory training, the success score for appointment will be determined by adding 40 percent of the arithmetic mean of the success grades of theoretical courses and 60 percent of the arithmetic mean of the success grades of practical courses.

Attendance at the preparatory training will be mandatory. The registration of teacher candidates who cannot attend or will not be able to attend the preparatory training for a total of 20 days or more due to documented health excuses will be frozen to be readmitted to the first preparatory training program following the resolution of their excuses. Except for documented health excuses, teacher candidates may be granted leave for up to 10 days during the preparatory training depending on their excuses.

For teacher candidates covered under the Anti-Terror Law, the Social Services Law, and the national athlete status, conditions other than the "having an exam score" requirement will be sought for admission to the preparatory training.

Security investigations and archive research will be conducted on those to be admitted to the preparatory training.
