Beef prices catch up to gold in price hikes

In Turkey, the pressure on citizens regarding both investment vehicles and kitchen expenses is increasing every day. The "Gold and Beef Price Indices" chart, prepared by economist İnan Mutlu and based on data from the TZOB and the Central Bank, has strikingly revealed the price volatility over the last 4.5 years.

WAR LOWERED GOLD, BUT COULD NOT STOP BEEF

According to the chart, when September 2021 is taken as the base (100 index value), although both items have shown a parallel rise, the developments in the recent period are particularly remarkable. While there has been a slight decline in gold prices following regional tensions (the Iran-Israel process, etc.), the climb in beef prices continues without slowing down.

İnan Mutlu's assessments on the subject are as follows:

"The government is focused on gold under the mattress, but the real picture is in the kitchen. Although gold prices have entered a downward trend after the war, beef price increases have begun to catch up with gold. Since September 2021, gold has increased 15-fold, and beef 14-fold. Access to the most basic food item is now becoming almost impossible."

BASIC FOOD HAS BECOME A "LUXURY"

According to the index based on March 2026 data;

Gold Index: 1497.0

Beef Index: 1391.9

These figures prove that beef has ceased to be just a food item and has turned into a cost item that competes with investment vehicles. Experts point out that rather than savings under the mattress, focus should be placed on the fire in the kitchen, noting that the impasse in livestock policies and rising costs are depriving citizens of protein consumption.
