BİSAM releases July 2026 report: Hunger threshold exceeds 36 thousand, poverty threshold surpasses 119 thousand liras

The United Metal Workers' Union Class Research Center (BİSAM) has published its "Hunger and Poverty Report for the July 2026 Period." According to the latest calculations, the minimum monthly expenditure required for a family of four to maintain a healthy and balanced diet (the hunger threshold) has risen to 36 thousand 324 liras. In the calculation based on household consumption expenditures over the hunger threshold, the poverty threshold was recorded at 119 thousand 330 liras.

The July data revealed the massive scale that mandatory kitchen expenditures have reached.

DAIRY PRODUCTS ACCOUNT FOR THE LION'S SHARE OF DAILY KITCHEN EXPENSES

According to the report, milk and dairy products constituted the highest cost item in the daily expenditures required for a family to eat healthily:

Milk and dairy products: Ranks first with a daily expenditure of 432.46 TL.

Vegetables and fruits: Ranks second with a daily cost of 275.04 TL.

Meat, fish, and chicken: At a daily expenditure level of 198.06 TL.

The BİSAM report also analyzed the reasons why the increase in the hunger threshold remained limited in the July 2026 period:

The main source of the limited increase in the hunger threshold was primarily the upward movement in the prices of fats and oils, as well as nuts.

The factors that limited this increase and prevented a more dramatic rise were the price declines observed in the cheese, red meat, chicken, and fish groups.
