A bitter prescription on Pharmacy Day: No medicine, no jobs
May 14 Pharmacy Day was marked more by problems than celebrations. Pharmacists emphasized that it has become difficult to access vital medicines in the market and that the number of unemployed pharmacists is approaching 10 thousand.
On the most important day for the pharmacy profession, industry representatives drew attention to mounting problems. Due to fluctuations in exchange rates, the determination of drug prices based on a fixed exchange rate, a policy of dependence on foreign raw materials, and the drug pricing decree, many vital medicines cannot be found on the market.
PHARMACY FACULTY INFLATION
In Turkey, where there were only 7 pharmacy faculties until 1997, that number has now exceeded 60. However, the increasing number of faculties has fueled unemployment rather than meeting the demand for the profession. While the quality of education is being debated, it is noted that only 17 faculties have full accreditation.
10 THOUSAND PHARMACISTS AWAIT APPOINTMENT
According to data from the Turkish Pharmacists Association, approximately 10 thousand pharmacists are unemployed across Turkey. Due to the failure to open sufficient quotas in the public sector and the shrinking of employment areas in the private sector, young pharmacists have become unable to practice their profession.
