Bloomberg analysis on Turkey: Market volatility following court ruling
The sharp volatility in the markets following the decision to annul the CHP's 38th Ordinary Congress has become a focal point for the international press. Bloomberg reported that the economic administration held an "emergency" meeting to calm the markets and that state banks have begun interventions.
US-based financial news outlet Bloomberg characterized the annulment of the main opposition party CHP's congress in Turkey as a "judicial blow to the opposition." The report emphasized that following this political development, selling pressure in Turkish markets increased and the economic administration took action to manage the crisis.
The Financial Stability Committee, which met in Istanbul under the chairmanship of Minister of Treasury and Finance Mehmet Şimşek, held a critical meeting to ensure the effective and healthy functioning of the markets. It was noted that the meeting was held after Borsa Istanbul closed the day with a sharp loss of 6.1 percent and the Turkish lira rapidly lost value against the dollar.
RISK OF DEPARTURE FROM ORTHODOX ECONOMIC POLICIES
International portfolio managers cited in the report warned that the court ruling could damage Turkey's economic credibility. William Blair International portfolio manager Daniel Wood stated that this decision could trigger the possibility of early elections and increase the risk of moving away from the "orthodox economic policies" that have recently attracted investor interest. Bloomberg noted that the decision comes at a very sensitive time for the Turkish economy, which is going through a fragile period due to high inflation and rising energy prices.
POLITICAL PRESSURE AND JUDICIAL CRITICISM
Bloomberg's analysis stated that the decision in question is interpreted as the "government using the judiciary to weaken its political rivals." While it was reported that the CHP is preparing to take the decision to a higher court, the article also recalled the imprisonment of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu during a period when he was preparing for candidacy, drawing attention to the increasing pressure on the opposition. The analysis included the interpretation that the current situation could be part of President Erdoğan's strategy to consolidate his power ahead of the 2028 elections.
