Body cameras to become mandatory for police officers

It has been announced that an important step will be taken in Turkey to increase the transparency of the police force and strengthen security measures. Minister of Interior Ali Yerlikaya, in an interview he attended on a television channel, announced that the body camera practice currently applied to traffic police will be expanded to cover all police officers in the General Directorate of Security starting next year.

The facial recognition system to be included in the body cameras will be developed by ASELSAN. Furthermore, Yerlikaya stated that the footage from the body cameras will be monitored from a central location in real-time and that intervention from the center will be possible when necessary.

This practice, which is quite beneficial especially in regions with high crime rates, is also present in some states in the United States. Police officers are required to wear cameras when they go on patrol. In this way, in the event of any attack or use of force, evidence can be obtained from the footage recorded by the cameras.
