Breaking News: Extraordinary convention move initiated: Deputies close to Özgür Özel resign from the Party Assembly

As the absolute nullity crisis continues within the CHP, the former Party Assembly members appointed following the decision will gather at the Headquarters today at 13:00.

According to the latest breaking news, it has been learned that Party Assembly members supporting the elected CHP Chairman Özgür Özel have decided to resign from the Party Assembly, and 28 out of 57 members have already resigned.

Thus, in accordance with Article 24/3 of the Party Charter, both the Party Assembly and the Central Executive Board elected from within it have officially fallen.

THE CHARTER SAYS 'CONVENTION IMMEDIATELY'

According to the Party Charter, if the number of Party Assembly members falls below two-thirds (40) of the total membership, it is mandatory to hold a convention within 45 days.

FIRST STATEMENT AFTER THE DECISION

Following the decision, Zeynel Emre, spokesperson for the Özgür Özel administration, is making a statement.

Emre's statements are as follows:

"As you know, we are in the midst of a major conspiracy as the CHP. A nullity decision was issued by a palace-focused faction against our party's corporate identity. According to this decision, the convention decision dated July 25, 2020, was selected. Undoubtedly, this is one of the greatest crises in Turkish political history. After this decision, we thought in very good faith about how we could lead our party out of this crisis. We had decided to attend the party assembly meeting that was to take place today. We thought, 'Let's go there, let the majority be us, and let us explain the sadness and pessimism of millions of CHP members and the possible consequences of this face-to-face once again, and have an extraordinary convention decision taken.' However, it was announced yesterday that 9 of our friends were referred to the disciplinary board without authorization.

I stated yesterday as well, 'If we want, we can bring down the party assembly with resignations.' The 3rd paragraph of Article 24 of our charter states that; when the PA falls below two-thirds, it falls and a new convention decision is taken. We have received the resignations of 17 people. Nearly 10 of our friends are currently on their way to the meeting.

There is no exception in the party article for 'if there is nullity.' From this point on, not convening the convention is a crime. They cannot take any decision other than taking the party to a convention. Therefore, we are calling out once again. Turn back from this mistake. Because today, there are 3 structures that everyone fighting for democracy in Turkey relies on. The first is the 'social opposition' led by the CHP; this carries great hope and courage. The second is the small number of press members who fight bravely. The third is the NGOs in this country that bravely object to wrongdoing. If we have not completely transitioned to a totalitarian regime, it is thanks to these 3 items.

From here, in the face of these facts we have expressed, we are calling out to the Court of Cassation one last time. Make a decision regarding this file as soon as possible."
