Breaking News: First statement from Numan Kurtulmuş regarding the fistfight at the swearing-in ceremony! 'It is an act against democracy'

TBMM Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş held a joint press conference with the President of the National Assembly of Slovenia, Urska Klakocar Zupancic.

In his opening remarks, Kurtulmuş spoke about the fistfight that occurred during the swearing-in ceremony at the TBMM.

Reacting to the CHP's occupation of the podium, Kurtulmuş said, "The ministers have taken their oaths. This behavior is unjust and inappropriate; it is an act against democracy. Preventing someone from taking an oath does not exist in democracy. Using coercive methods like occupying the podium is contrary to democracy. This coercion, this force, did not befit the dignity of the TBMM and has been recorded as an attempt contrary to the Constitution."

WHAT HAPPENED?

The appointment of Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor Akın Gürlek, who has been a signatory in investigations including cases conducted against CHP-run municipalities, as Minister of Justice was met with backlash from the opposition.

CHP members occupied the podium before Gürlek's swearing-in ceremony at the Parliamentary General Assembly.

Following the invitation of Gürlek to the podium by Deputy Speaker of the TBMM Bekir Bozdağ to take his oath, a fistfight broke out between CHP and AKP deputies who confronted each other around the podium during the ensuing tension.

In the brawl that broke out, it was observed that CHP Şanlıurfa Deputy Mahmut Tanal's nose was bleeding after being punched by AKP Ankara Deputy Osman Gökçek.
