Breaking News: Investigation launched into Özgür Özel over 'Akın Gürlek' remarks

CHP Chairman Özgür Özel made striking allegations regarding Minister of Justice Akın Gürlek during a live broadcast he attended last night (May 8).

Speaking on Sözcü TV, Özel stated, "Akın Gürlek speaks with Erdoğan on a crypto phone. If Mr. Erdoğan hasn't heard it, I am reporting it now; he says he is also listening to Erdoğan, he says he is recording the crypto phone."

Following this claim, the Bakırköy Chief Public Prosecutor's Office announced that an investigation has been launched into CHP leader Özel.

The statement from the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office included the following: "Upon the assessment that the public remarks made by CHP Chairman Özgür Özel regarding Minister of Justice Akın Gürlek on a television channel on 08.05.2026 contained misleading and untruthful expressions capable of disrupting public order and peace, an ex officio investigation has been initiated by the Bakırköy Chief Public Prosecutor's Office under Article 217/A of the Turkish Penal Code (TCK)."
