Breaking News: IYI Party leader Müsavat Dervişoğlu's reaction to İmamoğlu! 'It is an absurdity that can only happen in dictatorships'
Speaking at his party's group meeting, IYI Party leader Müsavat Dervişoğlu reacted to the detention of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu. Describing the operations against İmamoğlu as "oppression, tyranny, and an absurdity that can only happen in dictatorships," Dervişoğlu also issued a call to the opposition. Reminding that Erdoğan cannot be a candidate again according to the Constitution, Dervişoğlu stated, "If the disregard for the Constitution continues, if the path to candidacy is opened, and if similar practices aimed at eliminating potential rivals persist, the only thing to do is to boycott and protest the presidential elections. The entire opposition must now aim for a high parliamentary majority; this tyrannical administration's power to legislate must be taken away, and its hands must be tied."
IYI Party Chairman Müsavat Dervişoğlu spoke at his party's group meeting.
Dervişoğlu reacted sharply to the detention of IMM Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu.
"The detention of İmamoğlu is not something that can be explained by reason, law, or conscience," said Dervişoğlu, adding, "Filing chain lawsuits against a politician who claims to be a rival in the presidential election, canceling his diploma, and sending police to his home at the first light of dawn to detain him is oppression, tyranny, and an absurdity that can only happen in dictatorships."
Continuing his speech, Dervişoğlu emphasized that AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan cannot be a candidate again according to the Constitution, and called on the opposition by saying, "If the disregard for the Constitution continues, if the path to candidacy is opened, and if similar practices aimed at eliminating potential rivals persist, the only thing to do is to boycott and protest the presidential elections. The entire opposition must now aim for a high parliamentary majority; this tyrannical administration's power to legislate must be taken away, and its hands must be tied."
Dervişoğlu concluded his speech with these words:
"Oh Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the Turkish nation will emerge from this. Neither you, nor your circle, nor any power you rely on can prevent this.
This nation will not elect you again. It will never accept your mentality and your tutelage.
It will not be individuals, but choices that compete. It will not be despotism but freedom, not the Palace but the Republic that will win!
How happy is the one who says I am a Turk!"
Dervişoğlu's statements are as follows:
Great Turkish nation, my dear fellow party members, today we were going to hold a group meeting and share our views and thoughts with our nation regarding the issues Turkey is facing.
However, a new disgrace that Turkey experienced at dawn turned March 19, 2025, into a dark day in our democratic history spanning over 150 years.
The detention of IMM Mayor İmamoğlu is not something that can be explained by reason, law, or conscience.
In fact, Turkey's peace is being targeted. The will of the Turkish nation is being trampled underfoot.
The government is blinded by ambition
The Recep Tayyip Erdoğan government is making our country experience almost everything that would not happen in any democratic country.
The Republic of Turkey is a state of law. And sovereignty belongs unconditionally to the nation.
In our 102-year Republican history, we are witnessing developments similar to those that only occurred during coup days.
As we call for a Turkey that speaks, the government detains and arrests everyone who opens their mouth.
It is now understood that there is not much left to talk about. Democracy and law have been suspended in Turkey, and it has become impossible to conduct elections and politics.
The use of all kinds of force has been legitimized for the elimination of political rivals.
Great Turkish nation, the target of the tyranny that has been going on for months and which exceeded the limits of tolerance at dawn today is actually your unwavering will.
Filing chain lawsuits against a politician who claims to be a rival in the presidential election, canceling his diploma, and sending police to his home at the first light of dawn to detain him is oppression, tyranny, and an absurdity that can only happen in dictatorships.
ERDOĞAN CANNOT BE A CANDIDATE AGAIN
