Beylikdüzü Mayor Mehmet Murat Çalık, who was arrested as part of an investigation into corruption allegations against the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB), was transferred from Silivri Prison to İzmir on June 4. The moments when Çalık, who was taken to İzmir City Hospital, waved to his mother waiting in the courtyard became a trending topic on social media.
Çalık's mother, Gülümser Çalık, addressed the authorities in a statement today, saying, "I am helpless. I do not want to live through '99 again. I do not want my son to slip through my fingers. I ask for mercy from the Minister of Justice, the judges, and the prosecutors. Let them hear my cry. I cannot bear to watch my son wither away day by day."
