Search and rescue operations initiated after a catamaran-type passenger ship belonging to Filo Denizcilik capsized off the coast of Kyrenia in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus are ongoing.

While the evacuation of passengers on board continues with boats and helicopters, passengers brought to shore are being transported to hospitals by ambulance. It has been reported that there are fatalities and injuries in the accident.

Under the coordination of the Crisis Desk established in the region, ambulances, medical teams, and hospitals have been mobilized, while search and rescue activities continue.

CAPTAIN AND 7 PEOPLE ARRESTED

A notable development has occurred in the investigation regarding the accident.

TRNC Prime Minister Ünal Üstel announced in a statement following the accident that a total of 8 people, including the ship's captain, have been arrested.

Details regarding the specific charges under which the arrests were made are expected to become clear in the later stages of the investigation.

As the investigation into the capsizing of the ship continues, the manner in which the accident occurred, the vessel's sailing conditions, and whether there was any negligence in the operation and management of the ship are being investigated.

DEATH TOLL RISES TO 8

Minister of Transport Erhan Arıklı announced in his latest statement that the death toll from the accident has risen to 8.

Arıklı stated that 17 people are still being sought and reported that search and rescue efforts are continuing to reach the missing individuals.
