Breaking News... Özgür Özel: We oppose attacks on our neighbor Iran that disregard international law

Following the attack by the US and Israel on Iran, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has lost his life. As tensions in the region escalate rapidly, CHP Chairman Özgür Özel made a statement regarding the matter on his social media account.

Describing the rising tension as "contrary to international law," Özel emphasized that the crisis must be resolved through diplomacy.

Stating that they do not want war and conflict in the region, Özel used the expression, "We oppose such interventions that disregard international law." In his statement, Özel advocated for the crisis environment to be returned to the diplomatic table immediately and for negotiation channels to be prioritized, while calling on the parties for common sense and restraint.

Özel's statement is as follows:

"We are closely following the process that began with the US and Israel attacking Iran. We oppose the attacks carried out against our neighbor Iran that disregard international law. We advocate for the current crisis to be returned to the diplomatic table as soon as possible and to be resolved through an approach based on consensus and negotiation methods. Our party's stance regarding the latest developments is clear:

1) We do not want war and conflict in our region.

2) We reject our region being subjected to interventions by the US and Israel that disregard international law and rules, and do not hesitate to target innocent civilians.

3) While we do not approve of the oppressive policies of the regime in Iran that ignore human rights, we underline that those who will decide the future of Iran and our region are only and exclusively those who live here.

4) The peace and security of our region are of vital importance to our country. We are against any attempt that would destabilize this place.

5) As the Republican People's Party, we call on the parties for restraint and common sense, and we call on regional countries and the international public to stand against all interventions that disregard international law.

6) A war that spreads to the region will lead to irreversible destruction. In this context, we invite the parties to stop the attacks and return to the negotiation table as soon as possible.

7) As in the examples of Palestine, Venezuela, and Greenland, we see that the US and Israel are trying to establish a system where they can intervene in any country they want, change regimes by using force, and acquire territory. Against this audacity, which is emboldened by the indifference of the international community, we will continue to defend an international order that respects the sovereign rights of states and is based on law and ethics."
