Brutally murdered in front of his girlfriend: No defendants remain in custody in market

The last remaining defendant in custody in the trial of three brothers for the fatal stabbing of Semih Kenan Köse at a market in the Urla district of İzmir has been released.

The hearing at the İzmir 3rd High Criminal Court was attended by the detained defendant Sercan B. (33), the non-detained defendants Serkan B. (32) and Taylan B. (26), the defendants' relatives, and the lawyers for both parties. The victim's girlfriend, the complainant S.K., did not attend the hearing.

The presiding judge of the court stated that there were some deficiencies in the file and asked the detained defendant to provide a defense regarding his detention.

'I AM READY TO BE CONFINED TO EVEN A SINGLE ROOM OF MY HOUSE'

Defendant Sercan B. stated that he had never been to a police station before the incident that led to his imprisonment. Expressing that his life had changed because of people he did not know, Sercan B. said, "We had no intentional act. We were the ones who provided the first aid. We did not flee the scene. We handed the pocketknife used in the incident over to the police. I think the incident is no different from a traffic accident. I took out the pocketknife to keep the victim away from myself and my brothers. I am ready for any kind of judicial control. I am ready to be confined to even a single room of my house under judicial control."

Following the defense statements by the lawyers, the court panel decided to release Sercan B. with a travel ban and adjourned the hearing.

With the release of Sercan B., no defendants remain in custody in the case.

WHAT HAD HAPPENED?

On October 16, 2023, an argument broke out between Semih Kenan Köse (30) and Sercan B. at a market in the Altıntaş neighborhood due to "shoulder-bumping," and Köse, who was wounded with a knife, lost his life at Urla State Hospital, where he had been taken.

The police detained Sercan B. and his brothers Serkan B. and Taylan B., who were involved in the fight, and the suspects were arrested.

In the indictment prepared by the İzmir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, a lawsuit was filed against the three brothers demanding life imprisonment for the crime of "intentional killing in participation."

In the previous hearing, a release decision had been issued for the detained brothers Serkan B. and Taylan B.
