According to a report by Sırrıberk Arslan from Habertürk, 26-year-old Merve Ateş was also caught in the major earthquake in Hatay along with her family. The lifeless bodies of Merve Ateş's mother and father were recovered 4 days later from the rubble of the Mert Sarıgül apartment complex in the city's İskenderun district.

However, Merve Ateş could not be reached. Her sister and the family's relatives had been searching for her for months with hope, following claims that Merve had been pulled from the rubble injured and transferred to Mersin and then to Ankara.

The body of Merve, who had been sought for 18 months, was found at the Çankaya cemetery in İskenderun. It was revealed through DNA matching that 26-year-old Merve had been buried under another name.
